5 Fast Fixes for Leadership Improvement: #3–Physical Presence

Sit up straight, stand up tall:   Good posture boosts internal perception of leadership skills and ability.

  • Sit up straight at meetings and feel more confident and engaged (Arnette & Pettijohn, 2012). A slouching posture can indicate disengagement, disagreement and a sense of “I’m here because I have to be”.
  • To imbue confidence and be more persuasive, stand tall with feet slightly apart while speaking to a group. (Newman et al., 2016).
  • Strike a power pose: Feet apart, hands at your sides when standing, or feet apart when sitting.  Put your feet on your desk, stretch tall.  These things all boost hormones which make you feel less stressed and more confident.
